Heaven and hell

Every evening at six I would meet her
right outside the café
that romantic spot beneath the clock
it was the highlight of my day

Then one day she never showed
and I knew that it had ended
as the minutes ticked by my world tumbled down
it seemed that my life was suspended

Where is the place that we call hell,
and how far is it to heaven?
they’re both the same place it’s heaven at six
but hell if you’re still there at seven

The air-conditioned limo
dropped him off on Wall Street
he had an office on the sixty-fourth floor
and he lived in a penthouse suite

Life didn’t get any better than this
the money kept rolling in
and the buzz he got when his shares went up
kept his face in a permanent grin

But then one day it all fell down
the money was gone, the grin turned to a frown
an office on Wall Street is heaven or hell
it depends on your assets at the closing bell

He sat on the stairs in the subway
he saw no one and no one saw him
he’d been there too long to be noticed
so no one put coins in his tin

But he didn’t care he was stroking a rainbow
in his mind he was floating on air
the fix took away all the cold in his bones
and he felt like a millionaire

But when it wore off the torment returned
the rainbow was gone and the fire still burned
the heaven he’d known had now disappeared
and in it’s place was the hell that he feared

Heaven and hell are in the same place
they’re not down below or up there in space
they’re always with you in front or behind
if you look you will see them right there in your mind
