An explanation of sailing ships

If you see a yacht and it only has one mast
and it’s rigged fore and aft and goes really, really fast
it’s going through the water like a knife can go through butter
then it’s a sloop you’re looking at, unless it is a cutter

If it’s got another mast then it’s a ketch my brother
especially if the one behind is shorter than the other
but if it’s set behind the rudder, then it’s not a ketch at all
if that’s the case, then you will find it’s actually a yawl

And if the one in front is shorter then the longer one behind
then it’s probably a schooner, that’s how they are designed
and if it has an extra mast, it’s a schooner nonetheless
some have two or three or four, though five is in excess

But don’t worry if you’re never sure if it’s a sloop or yawl or cutter
no one knows and no one cares, except the nautical nutter
don’t worry if you’re never sure if it’s a ketch or not
’cause all these stupid sailing boats can still be called a yacht
