Sally couldn't help thinking that Juno wasn't as clever as he would have her believe. She walked through the wood for a while and soon she came upon a clearing where there were no trees. As she entered the clearing she saw a little dog lying on the ground. He was a dachshund and he lay next to the tallest giraffe that you could imagine, he was so tall that his head could not be seen because it was above a cloud that was in the sky. Under the lone cloud it was raining and the dachshund was lying in the rain singing in a very mournful tone. The rain is pouring, pouring down Sally couldn't help herself, she had to laugh at the sight of the little dog lying in the rain when all around him it was sunny. The dachshund stopped singing and a hurt look came across his face 'it's cruel to mock the afflicted' he said, and Sally stopped laughing and asked 'why don't you come out of the rain?' and the dachshund said 'I can't walk, and no-one will help me'. Sally said 'I'm terribly sorry, I'd be glad to help you, have you hurt your leg?'. 'It's not that I've hurt them, they just aren't long enough, and when I stand up they don't reach the ground' the dachshund said with a mournful sigh. Sally had to try hard not to laugh again, but she kept a straight face and said 'well, perhaps I could carry you out of the rain and put you down over here where it is sunny'. She went to pick the dog up and he said 'it won't work you know'. But she picked him up anyway and carried him into the sun. As she put him down again the giraffe took a step over so that he was standing next to the dog again and the cloud followed it so that it was still raining on the dog. Sally said 'I don't mean to be cruel, and I know some very strange things happen here, but would you mind standing up so that I can see how long your legs are?' and with a heavy sigh the dachshund struggled to his feet. Sure enough, when he was standing it seemed he was floating above the ground and his legs hung below him but never touched the ground so that when he moved them to walk he stayed in the same position. 'See, it's no good,' he said and lay down again. 'I'm sorry I laughed at you' Sally said 'my name is Sally and I will try to think of some way of helping you, I promise'. 'I understand' said the dachshund 'everyone laughs at me, I suppose it is rather funny as long as it is someone else, but it's no fun for me, I can tell you. My name is Herta and this is Milt'. He nodded towards the giraffe. 'Why does the giraffe stand so close to you all the time?' Sally asked, and Herta said 'He thinks I'm his mother, when he was born I was the first one he saw and he has been standing next to me ever since. He was only small then, but he just grew and grew until his head was above the cloud and now it's always raining, but he doesn't even know because it's sunny where his head is'. Sally shouted up at the giraffe 'Milt, would you put your head down here for a minute please? I would like to talk to you' and after a few moments Milt's head appeared below the cloud. An anguished look came onto his face as he noticed the rain pouring down on his head and he immediately lifted it above the cloud again. No matter how much Sally called after that Milt would not bring his head down again. 'Have you tried talking to him?' Sally asked Herta, 'perhaps if you explained the situation he would understand and leave you alone'. 'He won't believe me, I've tried to tell him, he just ignores me' said Herta. 'I've got an idea' Sally said. She picked Herta up again and carried him to the edge of the clearing and put him down next to a tree. Milt followed and stood close to the tree trunk. Then Sally searched around for some vines and when she found some she took them to where Milt was standing and used them to tie his leg to the tree. She then picked Herta up again and carried him back into the clearing and put him down in the sun. |
