Herta lay still for while, but when he realised that it was no longer raining on him his ears pricked up and he began to look around. His eyes grew large with excitement and then he jumped to his feet, and this time they reached the ground and Herta started running around in circles excitedly until suddenly he disappeared into the wood as fast as his short legs would carry him. Sally looked up at Milt, the cloud had gone and she could see his head. He had bent his neck and was eating the leaves from the top of the tree that he was tied to. As she watched him he ate and ate and the tree got smaller and smaller until he had eaten the whole thing. His head was now just a little above Sally and she saw that he had tears in his eyes, and he loped off into the wood to search for his mother. Sally called after him 'Milt, come back, Herta is not your mother, he's a dachshund and you're a giraffe'. But Milt disappeared out of sight with just one step of his tremendously long legs, and once more Sally was alone in this strange world. 'I hope I've done the right thing' Sally thought to herself, it's a pity Juno's not here, I could ask him. I wonder where he lives'. She walked back to where she had seen him and called out 'Juno, can you hear me? I'd like to ask you a question'. She waited in the silence for a while and then suddenly Juno appeared on a branch in front of her. 'You startled me' she said 'how did you get here without making any noise?'. 'Owls don't make a noise' he said tersely, 'but enough of that, what is it you want to ask me? Do you know what time it is, it's after midday, I don't like being up after light'. 'I'm sorry' Sally said 'But I was just with a dachshund and a giraffe and I think I might have done the wrong thing'. 'So you've met Herta and Milt the Stilt, what did you do?' Juno said. Sally explained what had happened and Juno laughed delightedly and then looked very grave and contemplated the situation for a few minutes before saying 'yes and no'. Sally waited for him to continue but Juno looked as though he was preparing to leave so she said 'what do you mean yes and no? You haven't answered my question'. 'Yes I have' Juno said 'you asked if you had done something wrong. The answer is yes, you did the wrong thing because Milt will be wandering about trying to find his mother, and no, you didn't do anything wrong because Herta will be happy to be free of him. Can I go back to bed now?' Once again Sally had to question Juno's wisdom, he hadn't told her anything she didn't already know. So she wandered around the wood hoping to find Milt so that she could explain that Herta wasn't his mother and after a while she found him. He was standing alone sobbing and Sally wished she'd never helped Herta, but Herta had been so unhappy and she had never considered poor Milt's feelings until it was too late. |
