'Hello, Milt' she said 'I'm sorry for what I did, but Herta isn't your mother and he was very sad'. Milt stopped sobbing and looking down at the girl said in a deep voice 'where is my mother then?'. When Sally told him she didn't know he continued 'will you be my mother?' 'I can't be your mother' she said in a slightly panicky voice 'your mother is a giraffe like you, I'm not a giraffe that's why you are so much bigger than me'. Milt looked very sad and wandered off again and Sally decided that she would search the wood for Milt's mother who, she thought, was probably searching for her son as well. So once more Sally returned to where she had spoken to Juno and called him again. When he appeared he said in a very testy voice 'what is it this time?' and Sally asked him if there was any other giraffes in the wood. There is no-one in the wood except me' said Juno 'in fact, there is nothing else in the whole world, only me'. 'What about me' asked Sally 'I'm here, aren't I?'. 'No' said Juno emphatically, 'you are merely a figment of my imagination, just like everything else around here, so go away'. 'How can I go away if I'm not really here?' Sally asked, but Juno ignored the question and said 'I would love to discuss philosophy with you some other time, but right now I am going back to bed. If you want another giraffe, then just imagine one and it will be there, but leave me alone and let me sleep'. Sally said 'there's no need to be bad-tempered, you did say that I should come to you if I needed to know anything'. But Juno had already disappeared again. Just in case he was right Sally tried to imagine Milt's mother, but nothing happened, so she continued to walk in the hope of finding her. She had not had any luck by the time night fell so she sat under a tree and thought of the events of the day. Today some funny things happened to me The dog spent the day just lying around And I spoke to an owl with very large eyes 'Did all this happen today?' wondered Sally, it seemed that she had been in this strange world for a very long time and the days blended into each other. She couldn't fathom what had occurred today and what had occurred yesterday, or even how many days she been here. Eventually she fell asleep. |
