Sally went to the place where Milt had been standing and asked an otter who was sitting nearby talking to himself if he knew where the giraffe had gone. 'I have seen a giraffe' the otter said 'and I've seen a lot of other strange things too, I once saw a fish who thought he could fly, and one day he did, what a surprise he gave us when he actually flew. Have you ever seen a fish fly?'. The otter told her his name was Duncan and then proceeded to tell her a story that had nothing whatever to do with Milt: 'I have a little story that I'll relate to yoy When he'd finished the story he lay on his back and laughed ecstatically until there were tears running down his face. When he eventually stopped laughing Sally asked 'what has that got to do with a fish flying?' and the otter said 'fish flying? Don't you mean fish frying?' and he laughed again for a few minutes. Sally said 'but you said you saw a fish fly'. 'Oh, you mean Dennis?' the otter said. 'One day in school he told all the other fish that he would fly'. Sally interrupted 'do fish go to school?' and the otter said 'of course, fish spend most of their time in schools. Anyway, all the others just laughed at Dennis and said ''go on then, show us''. So Dennis swam around in circles until he got up as much speed as he could, then leapt out of the water into the air. Unfortunately, he only went about half an inch up and then came back down again. Well, as you can imagine, all the other fish jeered at him saying that birds fly and fish swim, and he was a fish'. 'Well, Dennis became a bit of a loner, which is funny really because he'd been a fish all his life'. The otter stopped for a few minutes again and roared with laughter at his joke and then continued 'One day though, he saw an elephant drinking from the pool where he lived. So he swam into the elephant's trunk and the elephant became quite disturbed. I don't think they like having fish swimming about in their trunks, you're supposed to swim in swimming trunks, not elephant trunks' another bout of glee followed before he went on. 'Anyway, Dennis really tickled the elephant and he lifted his trunk out of the water and gave an enormous sneeze. Well, as you can guess, Dennis shot out like a bullet and soared through the air. All the other fish were amazed. He had actually flown. Nobody ever found out where he landed, he was never seen again, but he became a legend in his own lunch time'. 'But where did the giraffe go?' Sally asked becoming a little impatient. 'What giraffe?' Duncan said 'I never said anything about a giraffe, Dennis was a fish, not a giraffe'. 'There was a giraffe standing here before I came, you must have seen him'. 'Ah, yes' Duncan acknowledged 'a giraffe, a tall animal with spots?' 'that's right' said Sally 'where did he go?' 'Don't know, never saw him' Duncan replied. Sally gave up then, she was obviously not going to get any sense out of Duncan, but she couldn't help liking him, he was fun, if a little crazy. Just then a butterfly, whose name was Flora, landed close by and Sally noticed that she was gasping for breath. 'Are you all right?' she asked. The butterfly didn't answer for a minute or two, and then said 'yes, I am thank you, just a little out of breath. I am trying to fly down to the river to watch the paddling race, but I really don't fly very well. I flap my wings like crazy and try to go forward, but I seem to just go every which way except where I want to go. I hate being a butterfly, it's all very well being beautiful with colourful wings, but I'd rather be a bird and be able to go where I want to'. |
