'What was that?' Sally exclaimed, and Bernie said 'Don't worry, it's only Thunder, he's looking for a snack I suppose. He thinks he's the king and all the other animals are terrified of him. Quite rightly really, because he eats them when he catches them, but you'll be all right, he doesn't eat people and he's scared of me because he hates fire'. As Bernie spoke Thunder sauntered into the clearing. He was sniggering to himself and when he saw Bernie he said 'that got their adrenaline flowing' and he laughed loudly which sounded very similar to the roar they had heard earlier. 'Aren't you going to eat one of the animals?' Sally asked and Thunder said 'Oh no, not now, I had a big lunch, anyway you needn't be concerned, I won't eat you'. 'Why don't you eat people?' Sally asked 'don't we taste too good?'. 'It's not that' Thunder said 'but once I got a thorn in my paw and it was really sore and nobody would help me, everyone ran away except for one man called Andy, or something like that, who came and pulled the thorn out, so I don't eat people any more'. 'That must have been Androcles' Sally said 'I've often wondered if that was a true story'. 'Do you know him?' Thunder asked. 'No, I'm much too young' Sally replied, she didn't believe Thunder, she thought he had just heard the story and was trying to make her believe that he was the lion in the legend. 'Why do you like to scare the animals even when you don't want to eat one of them?' she asked. 'It does them good, keeps them on their toes, reminds them who's king' Thunder said 'I have to say that I envy Bernie here though, he eats cooked meals all the time, I'd like that'. Sally thought that Thunder was very mean, the way he treated the others, but she didn't have the nerve to tell him, she couldn't be sure that he wouldn't change his mind and gobble her up. She was quite pleased when he wandered off and couldn't help feeling that he was a bit of a phoney. When she looked around she noticed that Bernie had gone as well so she lay down to rest awhile as it was getting dark again, and her mind pondered over the events of the day. Is this a dream or is it real, it can't be what it seems I also met a grasshopper who jumps higher than a flea This world just seems so crazy, such strange things have occurred And sleep washed over her. |
